What is Handpoke Tattoo
Handpoke tattoo is how tattoos were marked into skin for thousands of years, prior to the invention of the rotary tattoo machine. I love coming back around to old ways and practices. Slowing down and tattooing by hand one dot at a time. It is a meditative process that is healing for both receiver and practitioner.

The process of Handpoking
The process of handpoking is a slower process than working with a machine. Handpoking creates less trauma to the skin than machine tattoo, and has a gentler healing process. My clients claim that their tattoos heal with less itching and scabbing.

Tattoo Talismans are meant to guide and protect you on life’s journey. Historically, skin marking has been used as a way to protect the body, for rituals, coming of age, healing, fertility, and more. In many cultures, women’s hands guided this practice.
Meet with handpoke tattoo artist Iris McGilloway of Wild Iris Tattoo at her private Carmel Valley studio Song Dog Studios, to receive your talisman discovery session, and schedule your appointment to receive your marking.
Iris focuses on intentional tattoo and ornamental designs through the method of Handpoking. She believes in art as healing and that the marking of the skin is a sacred right of passage.
